Human trafficking is a form of modern slavery that occurs in every state, including New Jersey. According to the NJ Human Trafficking Task Force brochure (below), "Victims of human trafficking, men, women and children, can be exploited for the purpose of commercial sexual activity, including prostitution and pornography, as well as many types of forced labor, including domestic servitude and migrant agricultural work. Traffickers lure and control their victims through the use of force, fraud, or coercion, and employ techniques such as physical and psychological abuse, false employment offers, document holding, and isolation.” While there are different types of human trafficking, research shows that sex trafficking is statistically higher than the rest in New Jersey. According to The Human Trafficking Hotline, there were 151 cases identified in 2021, with 466 victims involved (cases can involve multiple victims).
