June, is a time to recognize the plight of the LGBTQ+ community. Members of the LGBTQ+ community are at a heightened risk of experiencing sexual violence.
According to the CDC:
- Nearly Half of bisexual women (46%) have experienced rape in their lifetime.
- Gay and bisexual men report significantly higher rates of sexual assault than heterosexual men.
- Transgender people, particularly trans women of color, experience some of the highest rates of sexual violence, often coupled with other forms of discrimination and violence.
To support, we must:
- Believe survivors and respect their identities.
- Create affirming, inclusive spaces in every setting - from shelters to hospitals to support groups.
- Educate ourselves and others about the unique barriers LGBTQIA+ survivors face.
- Advocate for policies that protect LGBTQIA+ rights, access to healthcare, and anti-violence initiatives.
If you or someone you know needs support, you are not alone.
