April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
(SAAM). Denim Day, a campaign created by the organization Peace
Over Violence, is recognized on the last Wednesday of April in honor of SAAM.
Denim Day is a global movement designed to challenge victim-blaming.
The campaign is a visual demonstration
of protest against harmful attitudes and myths surrounding sexual violence,
such as the idea that clothing or behavior can imply consent. The
campaign was inspired by a case in Italy in which a rape conviction was overturned,
because the justices felt with the victim wearing tight jeans she must have
helped the person who raped her remove them thereby implying consent.
Along with the Union County Board of
County Commissioners, the Union County Rape
Crisis Center (UCRCC) and other
County allies / organizations invites you to
wear denim to help educate & advocate for change by wearing jeans with a
purpose!
Snap a group photo
of you and your friends/co-workers wearing DENIM and send it to rcc@ucnj.org
